That could be a problem on the race track, but considering these transmissions are mated to high-torque and low-revving V8s, it won’t be that noticeable. The shorter first and second gears will lower engine speed a lot more once you shift into the third because the gear ratio difference is greater. Then the third ratio is direct drive which is pretty standard for transmissions of this era. Shorter gear ratios get you noticeably better acceleration regardless of engine power and make towing a lot easier for the engine.
The 700R first and second gear ratios are considerably shorter than any of its alternatives. The reverse gear is 2.29:1, and all the ratios are identical to the 4L60, 4L60E, and 4L65E. The 700R transmission has a first gear ratio of 3.059:1, second gear is 1.625:1, third gear is 1:1 (direct drive), and fourth gear is 0.696:1 (overdrive). As proof of that, the even more popular 4L60E stayed in production until 2013 with minimal revisions other than the introduction of a TCM (transmission control module).
